Today's travel habits in the UK have a significant and increasing negative impact on the local and global environment. Most of these stem from motor vehicles.

The more obvious impacts include:

• congestion - with areas literally clogged up with traffic
   
• air pollution from exhaust fumes
   
• greenhouse gases causing climate change
   
• habitat destruction locally in the building of roads and car parks
   
• noise levels
   

Less visible impacts which increased car use brings with it include:

• oil spills at sea (as oil is trekked about the globe to keep our fossil-fuel habit fed)
  
  
• habitat destruction elsewhere in the world as the oil industry searches for oil in previously undisturbed places
  
  
• the dissection of towns and villages by traffic flows
